The Stripling Ammonites, the Stripling Warriors

In Alma 53:17, it describes the Ammonite warriors in this way:  “…And they entered into a covenant to fight for the liberty of the Nephites…”  This says much about the integrity of these young men.  Other highlights are as follows:

  • “…assembled themselves…”  (Alma 53:16) — this verse indicates responsibility, initiative, and the ability to act on their own free will (Doctrine and Covenants 58:27)
  • “…the laying down of their lives…”  (Alma 53:17) — This verse indicates commitment, fearlessness, and devotion.
  • “…never had been a disadvantage…”  (Alma 53:19) — This indicates that they were straight, true, and obedient.
  • “…that Helaman should be their leader…”  (Alma 53:19) — This indicates that they had heroes, that they could choose appropriate role-models, and that they were excellent followers.
  • “…young…valiant…courage…strength…activity…true…entrusted…”  (Alma 53:20) — They had proven themselves, even as young men.  Can we imagine being in the presence of 2000 young men with these qualities?
  • “…truth…soberness…keep the commandments of God…walk uprightly before him…”  (Alma 53:21) — Again, they had proven themselves and were true Christ-like disciples.
  • “…they are worthy to be called sons…”  (Alma 56:10) — They both showed respect and earned respect.  They were ‘sons’ in the same way the Christ is the ‘son of God’.
  • “…never had I seen so great courage…”  (Alma 56:45) — This was God-given courage, spiritual courage.
  • “…very young…Father…God is with us…”  (Alma 56:46)  — This displays their courage, their respect for Helaman, and their faith in God.
  • “…we would not slay our brethren if they would…”  (Alma 56:46)  — This shows their charity and compassion and patience.
  • “…they did not fear death…”  (Alma 56:47)  — They understood the Atonement of Christ and things of eternity.
  • “…they did think more upon the liberty of their fathers than the did upon their lives…”  (Alma 56:47) — They were unselfish and very mature in their thinking.
  • “…taught by their mothers…”  (Alma 56:47)  — They were teachable, believing, and receptive.
  • “…we do not doubt our mothers knew it…”  (Alma 56:48)  — They had testimonies and knowledge.
  • “…miraculous strength…mighty power…”  (Alma 56:56)  — They had the strength of David, of Nephi, of Abinadi.
  • “…never were men known to…”  (Alma 56:56)  — “…arise from the dust, my sons, and be men, and be determined in one mind and in one heart, united in all things…”  (2 Nephi 1:21)
