  • RemarksElder Oaks was a professor of law at the University of Chicago Law School, he served as President of Brigham Young University, and he is a former justice on the Supreme Court of Utah.  His third-great grandfather was the brother of Martin Harris, one of the three witnesses of the Book of Mormon plates.  After 33 years of service in the Quorum of the Twelve, President Oaks was called to serve in the First Presidency, serving as First Counselor to President Russell M. Nelson.  Interestingly, from 1998 to 2004, Elder Oaks had a brother serve in the Second Quorum of the Seventy.  This brother was Elder Merrill C. Oaks.  Dr. Merrill Oaks was a highly-respected and gifted ophthalmologist who practiced medicine in Provo, Utah for many years.  President Dallin H. Oaks was born in 1932 and Elder Merrill Oaks was born in 1936.
