TEMPLES — Dedications

QUESTION: Elder Boyd K. Packer, Acting President of the Quorum of the Twelve, had the privilege of dedicating the Regina Saskatchewan Temple on November 14, 1999.  Can you name some of the other times in this dispensation when an apostle who is not a member of the First Presidency has dedicated a temple?
ANSWER: Besides Elder Packer’s dedication of the Regina Saskatchewan Temple, other times when an apostle who was not a member of the First Presidency dedicated a temple include:  1) On May 17, 1888 Elder Wilford Woodruff, then President of the Quorum of Twelve, dedicated the Manti Utah Temple.  President John Taylor had died on July 25, 1887 and the First Presidency was not reorganized until April 7, 1889. Thus, Elder Woodruff, the most senior apostle, dedicated the temple.  2) The Nauvoo Temple was dedicated by Orson Hyde and Joseph Young. 3) Boyd K. Packer dedicated the Brigham City Utah Temple on September 23, 2012.  4) Dallin H. Oaks dedicated the Provo City Center Temple on March 20, 2016.  5) Elder David A. Bednar dedicated the Star Valley Wyoming Temple.  6) Elder Dale G. Renlund dedicated the Kinshasa Democratic Republic of the Congo Temple on April 14, 2019.  NOTE:  It has now become a regular occurrence for members of the Quorum of the Twelve to dedicate temples.  Currently, in late 2022, every member of the First Presidency and every member of the  Quorum of the Twelve has dedicated a temple.  Click here for information on general authorities that have dedicated temples.
