Tuesday devotional, President Jean B. Bingham, General Relief Society President, and her husband Bruce Bingham

Brother Bingham:

  • This is my first time to visit the Missionary Training Center.  The power of righteousness that emanates from you is strong.
  • You can do anything with the Lord’s help.
  • The most important or essential missionary characteristic is the ability to receive revelation.  Listen and then act.
  • How do we qualify for this gift?
    • Be worthy by being obedient
    • Be willing to receive revelation, don’t be afraid of being enlightened [the heart and a willing mind]
    • Recognize the promptings [I will tell you in your mind and in your heart].  This is the process by which Moses brought the children of Israel through the Red Sea
    • Act on the prompting! Elder Rasband teaches that we must act on the FIRST prompting. You will get it right 9 times out of 10.
  • Story about a missionary who asked Brother Bingham’s nonmember parents, “You don’t want your boys to grow up and marry slobs, do you?”  He then gave them a copy of the Book of Mormon and told them to read it and follow its teachings. They joined the church because of that inspired question.

Sister Bingham:

  • She couldn’t see well in college so she got glasses.  The world opened up to her, but she eventually grew tired of the glasses.  The world shrunk again.
  • Understanding brings the gospel into focus, as her glasses brought the world into focus.  It helps us to see into the future.
  • Don’t let the enthusiasm of your converts wane!
  • Choose to be “all in”.
  • How can you build the less active?  Focus on fundamentals (Faith repentance, baptism, Holy Spirit, enduring to the end).
  • Alma 22 – follow Aaron’s example, how he taught the king (fundamentals).
  • Knowing who you are changes what you do.  You are exhibit #1 to investigators.
  • Be brilliant in the basics:  1) Scriptures 2) prayers 3) service 4) being strictly obedient.
  • Consistently participate in the basics.
  • Don’t be multi-focused.  Have an “eye single” to your work and the glory of God.
  • On your mission, you will be the most tired, the most alone, and the most homesick you have ever been, but you will also be the most rewarded and the happiest that you have ever been.
  • Just be willing!
