Missionary Conference — Sunday, November 3, 2019

Mission Conference, Sunday, November 3, 2019.  The four speakers each highlighted one conference talk from our most recent general conference.

1/  Sister Frandsen:

  • She reviewed Elder Vinson’s talk.  Haggai told the people of his day to “consider thy ways” and prioritize.
  • Elder Vinson suffered a fat lip in a rugby game when he didn’t give his all.  He then suffered a fractured jaw in a game where he did give his all.  The fat lip is a worse memory than the broken jaw because he didn’t give his all with the fat lip game.
  • She said that she and her husband went out with the missionaries at least once a week, and these were the sweetest experiences of their mission.  We should be grateful even in adversity.
  • Lamoni’s father was willing to give half of his kingdom, and then ALL of his kingdom to know the joy of the gospel.
  • She told of two sisters in their mission that could have gone back to their apartment early, but decided to be obedient.  They found David during those last few minutes of their day, and he became a faithful member.  He was baptized on Christmas Day.
  • President Nelson has said that the days are long gone when one can be a quiet and comfortable Christian.  We are in a war for souls.
  • Our sacrifice matters to the Lord.  Don’t let anyone despise you because of your youth.  You will stand out in a wonderful way.
  • Moroni chapter 7 promises that we can become the sons and daughters of God by proper obedience and diligence.

2/ President Frandsen

  • Every person has a desire for belonging, a desire, a yearning to be included.

3/ Sister LeSueur

  • She reviewed President Eyring’s talk, which was entitled Holiness and the Plan of Happiness.
  • Wickedness cannot be happiness.  Increasing holiness leads to increasing happiness.  Sanctification is a process, not an event.
  • We need to have faith, to be obedient, to repent, to sacrifice, and to live worthy of our ordinances.
  • We need to be humble, meek, and patient.
  • Helaman 3:35 talks about yielding our hearts to God.
  • Happiness means keeping covenants, taking the Holy Spirit as our guide, becoming a saint, and setting aside the things of the world.
  • We need to repent and become one with the Father.
  • The influence of the Holy Ghost will help us be more holy.  The voice of the Spirit is a still, small voice.
  • Adversity can lead us to repentance.  We need to stay on the covenant path, repent daily.
  • The Lord doesn’t expect perfection at this time, but he does expect progress.

4/ President LeSueur

  • He reviewed Elder Uchtdorf’s message.  Just as a hobbit was called to a great adventure, so are missionaries.  A tremendous adventure lays ahead.
  • You displayed great courage to accept your call and come to the Missionary Training Center.  There is sacrifice and discomfort in accepting this call.
  • “I wouldn’t accept 1 million dollars to forfeit my mission experience.”  Ask worthy returned missionaries what their missions meant to them.  Look into their face as they tell you.
  • Focus on the blessings of your service, focus on the tender feelings.
  • As a young man, my birthday was all about me.  Christmas was all about others.  Is your mission going to be about “birthdays” or “Christmases”?
  • Anyone living without the influence of Christ in their life is unspeakably poor.
  • True impoverishment is living without the Holy Spirit.
  • Review Doctrine and Covenants 59:33, Doctrine and Covenants 123:12, and Matthew 16:25.
  • During his mission as a young man, his companion and himself were knocking on doors on a cold, rainy, snowy day in England.  A woman called to them from across the street and invited them to come in out of the cold.  She said, “Who are you?”  President LeSueur responded, “We are representatives of Jesus Christ.”  She said, “I thought so!”
