STIMULATOR message for the week of August 1, 1972

Message from President Merlin W. Sant, August 1, 1972

“And the Lord said, Simon, Simon, behold, Satan hath desired to have you, that he may sift you as wheat: but I have prayed for thee that thy faith fail not: and when thou art converted, strengthen thy brethren.”  (Luke 22:31-32)

Dear Fellow Missionaries, District and Branch Presidents:

Why should Jesus speak to Simon Peter in this manner?  After nearly three years with Jesus in the ministry, Peter should have been an outstanding spiritual leader among his brethren.  But Jesus knew him better than he knew himself.  As future events proved, Peter was not yet fully converted or committed and the Savior perceived his weaknesses.  Fortunately, later when circumstances required it, Peter rose to his full potential as a great spiritual leader and was able thereby to strengthen his brethren.

Without doubt, Satan hath desired to have many of us who are or should be the spiritual leaders in this Mission.  No matter who we are, Missionaries, district and branch leaders, Satan is ever alert to any weaknesses on our part that may permit him to sift us as wheat.  But even as Christ prayed for Peter, let us pray earnestly for each other and then live so righteously that Satan will have no power over us.  We must then make sure we are so fully converted and committed to the Lord’s work that we will be able to strengthen our brothers and sisters, both in and out of the Church.  And should we fail in doing that for which we have been ordained and set apart, we shall fail in the main thing which the Lord expects at our hands.

But never forget, As President Hartman Rector Jr. has said: “This church is a WINNER, with our without us.”

Faithfully your brother,

President Merlin W. Sant
