STIMULATOR message for the week of August 29, 1972
Message from President Merlin W. Sant, August 29, 1972
“And now, as ye have begun to teach the word, even so I would that you continue to teach: and I would that ye be diligent and temperate in all things. See that ye are not lifted up in pride; yea, see that ye do not boast in your own wisdom, nor of your much strength. Use boldness, but not overbearance; and also see that ye bridle all your passions, that ye may be filled with love; see that ye refrain from idleness.” (Alma 38:10-12)
Dear Fellow Missionaries —
Such was Alma’s counsel to his son Shiblon who had been teaching the gospel among the Zoramites. Previous to his giving this counsel, Alma had expressed great joy in what Shiblon had endured for the gospel’s sake, for he declared, “I have had great joy in thee already, because of thy faithfulness and thy diligence, and thy patience and thy long suffering.” (Alma 18:3). Even as Alma, we “have had great joy” in all of you who are teaching the gospel among the New Zealanders, and we counsel you that you continue to teach. According to Elder Barnard P. Brockbank, Assistant to the Twelve, that is our whole purpose in being here — to teach the gospel. Those missionaries who have 20 hours or more of teaching each week, are baptizing.
So work diligently to develop teaching opportunities and as Alma advised his son, be not prideful, not boast of your own wisdom or strength but “be thou humble, and the Lord thy God shall lead thee by the hand and give thee answers to thy prayers.” (Doctrine and Covenants 112:10) Use boldness in testifying and challenging, but be not overbearing lest your contacts become irritates. Learn to bridle all you passions to that you always may be fully in control of every situation. If you are filled with love for the Lord and his children, it will be reflected in your looks and actions
Last but not least, refrain from idleness, for idleness is the enemy of success, and we have been blessed and set apart to succeed.
