STIMULATOR message for the week of September 26, 1972

Message from President Merlin W. Sant, September 26, 1972

“Examine yourselves, whether ye be in the faith; prove your own selves.”  (2 Corinthians 13:5)

Dear Fellow workers —

In this counsel to the Corinthians, the Apostle Paul evidenced awareness of the benefits to be derived from self evaluation.  Experience teaches us also that it can be a worthwhile and rewarding procedure to regularly take the time to ponder over what we are expected to do and how well we are doing it.

As worthy Latter-day Saints and authorized servants of our Heavenly Father, we should be able to give positive and affirmative answers to question such as these:

  • Do I really know Jesus Christ?  Do I have an active, hard-working faith in Him as my Savior, or am I a lip-service Saint?  Does His Gospel excite me?
  • What brings me greater happiness, serving my own selfish interests, or serving the Lord and His children?
  • Is the Holy Ghost fully operative in my life?  Do I pray often both alone and with my companion?  Do my prayers express gratitude?  Sincerity? Humility?
  • Do I have a genuine love for all people, especially my companion?  Not just tolerance, but ‘the pure love of Christ’?
  • Am I dedicated, industrious, and enthusiastic?  Do I willingly perform in my assigned duties even when it is not convenient?
  • Do I have control of my tongue and temper?  Am I cheerful and friendly, punctual and honest?
  • Am I a good follower, submissive to the counsel of my leaders and the promptings of the Spirit?
  • Do I honor my priesthood and my calling by the way I dress, speak, and act?

If our answers to all these questions are not positive or affirmative, we can take comfort in this verse from the book of Ether:  “And if men come unto me, I will show them their weaknesses.  I give unto men weaknesses that they may be humble; and my grace is sufficient for all men that humble themselves before me; for if they humble themselves before me., and have faith in me, then I will make weak things become strong unto them.”  (Ether 12:27)

“There is a faith that causes things to happen”, said Elder Boyd K. Packer

Faithfully,

President and Sister Sant
