STIMULATOR message for the week of October 5, 1971

Message from President Eugene C. Ludwig, dated October 5, 1971.

“THE SECRET OF SUCCESS IS CONSTANCY OF PURPOSE!”   “600” in 1971

Dear Fellow Missionaries,

“Therefore, O ye that embark in the service of God, see that ye serve Him with all your heart, might, mind, and strength, that ye may stand blameless before Him at the last day.”  (Doctrine and Covenants 4:2).  Let’s not lose momentum!!  Consider the automobile we drive.  Assume that our brakes are in good condition and we are driving at 20 mile per hour on dry level pavement.  Should we decide to stop, our car will travel approximately 25 feet before coming to a stop.  At 40 miles per hour, the distance required to stop is 105 feet, or roughly four times greater.  At 50 miles per hour the stopping distance jumps to 300 feet.  We are traveling only 3 times as fast, yet our momentum is so much greater that it requires twelve times the distance to check it.  Starting up again, our automobile will consume more gasoline, gaining a certain speed, than will be required to keep it at that speed once attained.  The same is true with the human body.  It requires more energy to take the first step than the second, third, or any succeeding step.  Once under way we have the added push or momentum to increase the effect of our efforts.

Every time we have a baptism, we are given an opportunity to pick up missionary momentum (the confidence and enthusiasm that comes with success) or — we can sit back and rest on our laurels.  The choice is yours — Are you going to use your momentum to have more baptisms?  If we choose to coast, we will remove the constant force of activity upon which momentum depends.  We will be shortchanging God, the wonderful people in New Zealand, our families, but most of all we will be shortchanging ourselves.  We will be deserting the firing line at the time when we are equipped, both physically and spiritually to be most effective.

Let’s keep the momentum going that we have started in the New Zealand South Mission!  “And any man that shall go and preach this gospel of the kingdom, and fail not to continue faithful in all things, shall not be weary in mind, neither darkened, neither in body, limb, nor joint; and a hair of his head shall not fall to the ground unnoticed.  And they shall not go hungry, neither thirst.”  (Doctrine and Covenants 84:80).  We know, if we all do our part, that the Lord will bless us with our goal for this month.  We are counting on YOU!

Faithfully yours,
President Eugene C. Ludwig
