STIMULATOR message for the week of November 28, 1972

Message from President Merlin W. Sant, November 28, 1972

“Lift up your head and be of good cheer, for behold, the time is at hand, and on this night shall the sign be given, and on the morrow come I into the world, to show unto the world that I will fulfill all that which I have caused to be spoken by the moth of my holy prophets.”  (3 Nephi 1:13)

Dear fellow missionaries:

Thus did Christ announce his birth to Nephi, the son of Nephi, as recorded in the Book of Mormon.  Traditionally, the text, as found in Luke 2:8-14, is used to recall that momentous event.  In part, it declares: “And the angel said unto them, fear not: for behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy, which shall be unto all people.  For unto you is born this day in the city of David a savior, which is Christ the Lord.”  Of all the important events that have taken place in the history of the world, none has been more meaningful or significant than that.

By now, no doubt, you are wondering why we are placing so much emphasis on the birth of Christ when we will not be celebrating or commemorating it for nearly four weeks.  There is a good reason.  According to the record, there is a marked tendency to slow down or ease off in our proselyting efforts during December.  To counteract that and maintain our productivity we have scheduled the Zone Conferences for that month and have prepared this message.

How could we better approach or appeal to people than by saying “We’ve come to tell you about the birth of Jesus Christ.”  Then quote the scripture from Luke that we mentioned above and go on to tell them about Samuel’s prophecy as recorded in Helaman 14:2-7 and its fulfillment as found in 3 Nephi 1:13-21.

More importantly, we not only want the people to know the Book of Mormon tells of Jesus’ birth but that it testifies He is the Christ, the Son of God, and the Savior and Redeemer of the world.  Other pertinent scriptures are found in 1 Nephi 11 and 3 Nephi 11:10-11.  Learn all these scriptures well so that you are fully imbued with the magnificence of this glorious Christmas message.  Then go forth in faith and in the power of your calling, declaring it and testifying of it to all who will listen.

Faithfully yours,

President and Sister Sant

“For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given, and the government shall be upon his shoulders, and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counselor, the Mighty God, the Everlasting Father, the Prince of Peace.”  (2 Nephi 19:6)
