“STIMULATOR” message for the week of June 22, 1971

Message from President Eugene C. Ludwig, dated June 22, 1971.

“A DREAM IS OF NO VALUE UNLESS IT IS FOLLOWED TO ITS REALITY.”    “600” in 1971

Dear fellow missionaries,

FOLLOW-UP…The most important words in the missionary vocabulary.  Why?  Because it permeates our every action as a missionary.  We are successful because we FOLLOW-UP on our contacts, the members and ourselves.  Effective follow-up is making sure that the job gets done.  Effective follow-up results in commitments being kept.  They are kept because you or a member, along with the Lord, have helped the investigators make up their minds to keep their commitments.  When members work with the missionaries on follow-up before baptism, it prepares them to better assume their responsibility of follow-up and fellowshipping them as new members of he Church.

Paul H. Dunn illustrated the importance of FOLLOW-UP, when he said: “In professional baseball, one of the most important and difficult lessons a pitcher must learn is the skill of following through with the pitching motion after the ball is released.  This is the process of throwing a ball toward a target — home plate — and then instead of stopping the motion of the arm, it is allowed to go around in front of the body and to the opposite side.  The purpose of the follow-through in any sport is to ensure accuracy, maximum power behind the throwing or kicking effort, and continuous motion so one does not strain the muscles of the arm.”  We must constantly be checking-up to be successful.  If we stop, slow down. or go off on a tangent, we impair the cycle we once started rolling toward our goal.  We must be thorough in our missionary work and follow-up regularly on all phases of the program.

FOLLOW-UP on estimates for each of the next three weeks, to assure weekly baptisms.  FOLLOW-UP on first contacts to prepare them to receive the discussions.  FOLLOW-UP on all referrals, including those from the Open House, making sure everyone who is ready will have an opportunity to hear our message.  FOLLOW-UP with members in your area.  Train them to find investigators, to hold group meetings, and to fellowship investigators and new converts.  Systematic follow-up ensures that the job is done and down well.  It is seeing that every angle is checked and rechecked, and every lead followed-up and every effort made to assure effective missionary work.

Let’s follow-up baptisms with baptisms and make June the greatest month ever.  We love you and appreciate your devotion to this great missionary work.  Our faith is in you.

Sincerely yours,
President and Sister Ludwig
