“STIMULATOR” message for the week of June 8, 1971

Message from President Eugene C. Ludwig, dated June 8, 1971.

“IF YOU SIT DOWN ON THE TRACK, YOU ARE APT TO GET RUN OVER”   “600” in 1971

Dear Missionaries,

“And if ye keep my commandments and endure to the end, ye shall have eternal life, which gift is the greatest of all the gifts of God.”  (Doctrine and Covenants 14:7).   Imagine if you can the depression of those five foolish virgins who stood outside the closed door with the words still ringing in their ear, “Verily I say unto you, I know you not.”  Let’s all be faithful, righteous, and valiant to the end, remembering that “by your works ye shall be known.”

May we quote from a letter we recently received from one of our missionaries who has been released:  “Missionary work is the greatest work that can be done on the earth today and as missionaries for Jesus Christ we should use our authority and talents to the best of our abilities for the building up of the Kingdom of God on the earth.  Tell the missionaries to trust in the Lord and to devote all their time, right to the end, to this great work, and things will fall into place when they get home.  I bear testimony to you that the Lord will guide you to the right in all you do throughout the rest of your life,  if you will remember Him and serve to the best of your ability for your two full years.”

Unfortunately, some missionaries do themselves a great injustice by letting down the last few months of their mission, leaving a vivid impression of laziness.  Don’t let this happen to YOU.  Be the type of missionary that can leave the field highly respected because you have done the things required to be recognized successful, that is produced well in baptisms, borne a strong testimony to thousands of people, planted seeds of Gospel truths in the hearts of many, been willing to lose yourself in the work and in so doing have developed the qualities of honesty and integrity, as well as an understanding of the truths of the Gospel.  Most of all, though, you have been spiritual and have felt the inspiration of being guided by the Spirit of the Holy Ghost, making it possible for you to have effectively taught the principles of the Gospel to others.

Any of you who are track stars, know that the race ends at the finish line.  Whether you name goes down on the record book as a winner depends upon where you are when the race ends.  So the final sprint has much to do with the overall success of your mission.  It not only affects the mission records, but has much to do with the final impression you make upon your own soul.  There are many of you outstanding missionaries who will be leaving our mission in the next few months.  May you all truly be leaders in the final sprint and be able to say, “I have fought a good fight, I have finished my course, I have kept the faith.”  (2 Timothy 4:7)

Sincerely your companions,
President and Sister Ludwig
