Unique names in given families

Friends, if you or your family members appear on this list, please don’t take offense. Again, I am not making a statement about the “quality” of the names, only the “uniqueness”.

Names in a given family

June 2023 — Here are the names of six children in one family. The parents loved the Book of Mormon: Shelem (girl), Sariah (girl), Mahonri (boy), Jared (boy), Moroni (boy), Mosiah (boy). Three of the boys could brag that they were the ‘brother of Jared’. Mahonri also told me that his wife’s name is Kenya, and they named their little girl Nyrobi (Nairobi is the actual capital of the country of Kenya).
March 2023 — I did anesthesia on a young woman named Annalisa this month. Her husband was accompanying her that day. His name was Scout. I asked if his siblings had unique names, and he told me the names of his siblings: Mercedez (sister), Sailor (sister), Storie (sister), and London (brother).
February 2023 — A nurse that I work with shared with me the names of siblings in one family in her ward. They are as follows: Cairo Syrus (girl), Calypri Rogue (girl), Dublin Trail (boy), Golden Pixie-clover (girl), and Stellar Jive (girl).
January 2023 — One of the nurses I work with shared with me the names of her aunts and uncles. These are the siblings of her father. There were eight children in the family, six boys followed by two girls. Their names (first and middle) were: Eldon Dean, Delno Jean, Delmer Dee, Loren Lee, Marvin Clee, Verlon LaDee, Ula May, and Lila Kay. The nurse’s father was Verlon LaDee, and he wanted to name my nurse friend DeeLa, which is his middle name inverted. The mother would not allow it, gratefully.
December 2022 — Three children in one family named Vaden (girl), Ketta (girl), and Halt (boy).
November 2022 — Our daughter, Anne, became aware of a family with 8 children with the following names: Kaele, Kori, Kortni, Korbin, Kody, Kevin, Karmen, and Kaiser.
September 2022 — One of our patients at the eye center had the last name of Frost, which is somewhat unique. When asked about his last name, he told us that he has two male cousins (brothers) with the same last name. Their first names are Dee and Jack!
July 2022 — One of the nurses I work with has neighbors that recently had twins, a boy and a girl. They named the little boy James and the little girl Semaj. Semaj is James spelled backwards. It is pronounced ‘see-madge’. The parents thought the clever reversible names would be a bonding link between the two twin siblings.

June 2022 – became aware of a family with three girls named Pandora, Pippa, and Polo.
May 2022, we became aware of twin boys named Gander and Mallard.
In April of 2022, I was told about a family that has 11 children, and they used the same four letters to drive names for all of their children. The four letters are A-E-L-X, and here are the names: Alex (13 years old), Axel (12 years old), Xela (11 years old), Lexa (10 years old), Xael (9 years old), Xeal (8 years old), Exla (5 years old), Leax (4 years old), Xale (2 years old), Elax (1 year old), and Alxe (6 months old). They are apparently planning on one more child, whose name will also be formed from the four letters.
In March of 2022, we helped a family at our surgical center with the last name of Mackintosh. The father of this family was named Tosh Mackintosh. He and his wife named their own little boy Mack Mackintosh.
My wife, Susan, was familiar with a family in Florida in which all of the children were named after types of wood. The children’s names were Ashwood, Birchwood, Cottonwood, Vanessa Cherrywood, and Hana Mulberry. The father of these children hand-crafted a baby cradle for each child, made out of the wood after which the child was named.
In 2021, a young man named Moroni was assigned to me as my ministering companion. Being interested in his unique name, I asked about the names of his siblings. He told me there were 6 children in the family and that their names are Moroni, Jared, Mosiah, Sariah, Mahonri, and Shelem (Ether 3:1). Obviously the parents of this family loved the Book of Mormon!
A colleague of mine works with a family that has brothers named Winner and Loser. Winner is the older brother and Loser is the younger brother.

I have close ties to the Jared Pratt family, being a 3rd-great-grandson of Parley P. Pratt. I recently became aware of some of the names of Orson Pratt’s children, Orson being a younger brother of Parley. Orson had multiple wives and numerous children. He must have had a penchant for inventing unique names. Here are just some of the names of his children: Lathilla, Milando, Oradine, Lorinda, Viana, Latilda, Willson, Eltha, Ortheras, Lorus, Liola, Vanson, Marintha, Clomenia, Milson, Alva, Rella, Irintha, Laron, Neva, Larinda, Lorum, Onthew, Orlon, Herma, Celestia, Elzina, Willow, Orthena, and Harmel.

We attended a church meeting in St. George. A family had been asked to speak. The names of the four children were Raven, Phoenix, Autumn, and Falcon. The family’s last name was Goldtooth!

A mother named Vinnia brought her three-year old daughter to our surgical center. The mother, at the birth of the little girl three years previous, had a flash of inspiration and thought it would be clever to name her little girl Ainniv, which is the mother’s name spelled backwards. The name is pronounced ‘eye-NIV’.
I did anesthesia on a woman named September. She did not laugh when I asked her if her brother, October, liked his name as well. When I told September that I collected unusual names, she told me that I would enjoy the names that her brother-in-law chose for his children. He and his wife had three girls and one boy whose names were Cheyenne Starlie, Daisy Clementine, Pyper America, and Lucky Blue. September also told me that she named her son Kanyon.
Two sisters, aged 4 and 2, named Tova and Keeva.
I participated in the surgery of a pleasant woman named Raychellene. She told me that her parents ‘made up’ her name. She liked her unique name so much that she decided to give her three daughters the same joy in their lives that she had had in hers. She named her daughters Dexonna Keturah (duh-zhon-uh), Axuray Chellene (a-zhur-ay), and Tayxa Byrd (tay-zhuh).
I did anesthesia at Riverwoods Surgical Center on a very pleasant young woman named Sarcie (pronounced ‘sehr-see’, not ‘sar-see’). When I told her I collected unique names, she then told of the names of her siblings. There were seven children in the family, 5 girls followed by 2 boys. Their names are Trachelle, Sarcie, Taralee, Shaelese, Braelene, Draesen, and Devry. Sarcie told me that her father loved to “invent new names”.
Brothers, ages 4 and 6, named Alex and Axle.
A television game show had twin girls named Shelvia and Gelvia. Their mother’s name was Elvia. On the same show were twin girls named Mercedes and Porsche.

A friend of mine (KV) has a cousin who was named Brian at birth. That name was much too plain for him, so he legally changed his name to Phontaine. He married Hannah, and they named their children the following: Tia Rachelle, Caleb Washington, Sassafrass Sapphire Sephronia, Blackstone Bruce LeRoy, Trixie Petunia Pineapple, Falcon Jasper, Royal Teancum (they call him Royal T), Superstar Five Jemima, Valkyrie Rose Svava Lyn, Ruby Buttercup, Lachoneus Q, and Silverback Judd.
I did an epidural on a 24-year old who was on methadone for long-term IV drug abuse. She smoked during her pregnancy and was covered with tattoos. Her partner was likewise covered in tattoos, had an obscene T-shirt on, and had very long hair. As I finished the epidural I asked them what they were going to name this baby. He responded, “Abinadi”. After my surprise passed, I asked, “The same as the Book of Mormon prophet?” He replied, “Absolutely. We not only like the way the name sounds, but we like what he stood for!”. He continued, “You might not be into things like that, but we are.” I was at the same time both amazed and gratified. I was reminded once again to not judge a car by its hood ornament.
Urick Steele Coleman (initials USC). The mother was a huge USC fan, and named her boy accordingly. When told that uric was the name of an acid found in human urine, she was unmoved)

One of our nurses at the Riverwoods Surgical Center is friends with a couple with unique names. The husband’s name is Jayde, the wife’s name is Amber, and they named their first little girl Onyx. It will be interesting to see if they stick with the precious stone theme as more children arrive.
A wonderful friend of mine (TG) has a daughter is named Whitley, and she became pregnant with twin girls. She considered the following names for her twins: Blakeley, Eiseley, Paisley, Oakley, and Marley.
Four children in a given family — Theo, Otto, Georgia, Pepper.
A close friend who did his medical training in Boston was aware of a set of twins named Lemongello and Orangello (lemon jello and orange jello). He also was aware of a mother who gave birth to twins and named them after two antibiotics — Keflex and Keflin. He also met a family with the last name of King that had named their little boy ‘Nosmo’. Thus, the boy’s full name was Nosmo King !
True story — A couple lost a stillborn at 36 weeks, then a stillborn at 27 weeks, and then had a miscarriage at 12 weeks. A rare clotting disorder was then diagnosed and treated. The mother then received in vitro fertilization and became pregnant with twins, a boy and a girl. They were healthy and born at 32 weeks. They named the girl Mira and the boy Cole, which equals MIRA-COLE!

One of our nurses at OCH had chosen the name of Camille for her first little girl. When her husband gave the baby a name and a blessing in Sacrament meeting, he felt “inspired” to change the name to Camden. My nurse friend was not pleased, but what could she do?

Did an epidural on a woman named Melody. She was having her second set of twins. Names of her children – Leia, Aria, Harmony, Cannon, Iain, Brev, Selah. Brev and Selah were twins, and Leia and Aria were twins.
Mother loved the color purple, so she named her children after shades of purple — Lavender, Lilac, Violet, and Thistle (a boy).
Did anesthesia for a family that had four daughters — Zamari Rain, Sapphyre Sttorm (correct spelling), Malibu Star, River Ramsy. The parents told me they love unique names, and all the middle names are formed from combinations of the first letters of names of close and distant family members.
A nurse at American Fork Hospital told me she took care of a family that had 6 children — Stormy (girl), Cloudy (girl), Rainy (girl), Sunny (girl), Thunder (boy), Lightning (boy).
A couple that delivered at Orem Community Hospital had four boys — Cyrus Ned, Tillman Kale, Oliver Hugo, and Alton Graham
A wonderful friend of mine (JM) has a sister and brother-in-law that have named their children Archimedes, Linus Maximus, Ruby, Herbie, Moses, and Penelope.
This same friend (JM) grew up in a ward with the Popp family. The Popp parents had twin girls and named them Pepsi and Sodie (True Story!)
I did an epidural at Orem Community Hospital for a woman who had named her four children Minnette (girl), Aurelle (girl), Jovi (girl), and Waits (boy). No, that is not a misprint – WAITS as a boy’s name.

Did an epidural on a woman at OCH in May 2012 whose last name was Stone. She and her husband named their first girl Gray Weather Stone, their first boy Timber Wolf Stone, and they were deciding between Slate and Justice for their 3rd baby if it was a girl, and between Quig and Quake if it was a boy. They were a Caucasian couple from Orem. Postscript: When the third baby was born, it was a boy. They didn’t think he looked like a Quig or a Quake, so they named him BattleStar, a name suggested by Gray Weather. Second postscript: When it was time to finalize the birth certificate, they just didn’t feel good about ‘Battlestar’. They finally settled on ‘Draycon Val Stone’.
A father named Taylor and a mother named Megan named their little girl Taygan, a combination of their two names.

A woman that I did an epidural on at OCH in July 2012 was considering the following 4 names for her little girl – Millicent, Kwinsey, Loddie, and Zoe.
I did an epidural on a woman named “Nalissy”. I asked about the origin of her name. She said her parents “made it up” because they wanted unique names for their children. Her parents are Caucasians living in California. The names of the 5 children in the family are Narik, Nisha, Noblik, Nacoree, and Nalissy.
True story: late 1800’s, pioneer baby born very premature, not expected to live, father gave the baby a name and a blessing in expectation of pending death, inspired to bless the baby to live and the name “Philandro” was revealed to him, named the baby Philandro, dad later stated that he had never heard that name before but was told by the spirit that that was to be the baby’s name, the baby lived and lived a long fruitful life with the name of Philandro.
One of our nurses at OCH has neighbors that are committed to their English ancestry. The husband and wife call each other “my lord” and “my lady”, and they named their first two boys Dragon Slayer and Court Jester.
Mom wanted unique names, so she made these up for her 4 children — Kyliah, Kyara, Kayden, Kyler

Children in a family in Lindon — Rocky (boy), Pebbles (girl), Golden (boy), Dustyrose (girl), Deacon Blue (boy), Pepper Blaine (boy), and Shadowbrook (boy). Deacon was born with a nuchal cord and was very blue at birth, hence the middle name of Blue. The mother wanted a more traditional name for the first girl, and had chosen Mary as her name. When the father went up to bless the baby girl in Sacrament meeting, he said he had a flash of revelation and he gave the little girl the name of Pebbles on the spot during the blessing.
Interesting experience on 1-17-13 at Orem Community Hospital. We were preparing to give anesthesia to a little boy named Ezekial when I noticed in the medical records that his mother’s given name was Temple Marriage. She was Samoan, and I asked her if her siblings also had religious names. Here are the names of her and her siblings: Temple Marriage (girl), Celestial (boy), Mahonri (girl), and Missouri (girl). Missouri was chosen to commemorate the sacrifices of the saints in that state, and Temple was born on the anniversary of her parents’ temple marriage.

Wonderful family (S) in Patea, New Zealand that we loved during our mission: Zebedee, Oskar, Tigerlily, Fontaine, Hans, Ulrick, Wilfred, Gilliam, and Dulcibella May.

We had a sweet MTC missionary come through our branch named Ptolian Michael Takis. I asked him about his first name. He told me that his father is of Greek lineage, and he decided that he would give each of his children a first name with some tie to the Greek language. He gave each of his five children a “Greek” first name and a more normal Caucasian middle name (with the exception of the last child, a girl, who received only a first name). The five “Greek” first names of the children were Ptolemy, Ptolian, Ptobias, Ptallan, and Psadie. The P is meant to be silent in each of the names.
A nurse friend at Orem Community personally knows a family that decided to name all of their children after “water” related items, hence their children’s names are Rain (girl), Storm (boy), Falls (boy), Noah (boy), and Sea (girl).
Some of Susan’s ancestors named their children Valverda, Vernal, Verland, and Vinol.
We learned of a family with the last name of Stuffelbeam. We were grateful for a simple-to-read and simple-to-pronounce last name
During our service as missionaries in New Zealand, we did some service at an elementary school in Manaia. A week later we received a ‘Thank You’ card from the children of the school. The card was to thank the members and missionaries of the Taranaki district for the service project that we rendered at their school. Here are some of the names that were on the card: Nikora, Kyana, Zodiak, Slai-Ann, Xzealeah, Callum, Kasmyn, Aylah, Mykaia. Americans definitely don’t have a monopoly on unique names for children.
