Scripture Commentary — 2 Nephi 25:1-8

Why should we study the words of Isaiah?

2 Nephi 25:1-8 — Why should we study the prophecies of Isaiah?

Reasons we should study Isaiah:

  • The Lord Himself has commanded us to do so.  (3 Nephi 20:11, 3 Nephi 23:1, and Mormon 8:23)
  • To gain an understanding of the House of Israel.  (3 Nephi 23:2)
  • Isaiah speaks to the Gentiles.  (3 Nephi 23:2)
  • All that he prophesied has been or will be fulfilled, and we can know of it.  (3 Nephi 23:3, 2 Nephi 25:7-8)
  • He persuades us to believe in Jesus Christ.  (1 Nephi 19:23)
  • He actually saw the Lord.  (2 Nephi 11:2, Isaiah 6:1)
  • His words are for our profit and for our learning.  (1 Nephi 19:23)
  • We can liken his words to us.  (2 Nephi 11:2, 8)
  • His message to us is one of joy and delight.  (2 Nephi:2 & 8, 2 Nephi 25:5)
  • To know concerning the manner of prophesying among the Jews.  (2 Nephi 25:1)
  • To know of the judgments of God.  (2 Nephi 25:3)
  • To gain the spirit of prophecy and understanding.  (Alma 5:45-46, Alma 17:2-4, 2 Nephi 25:4)
  • Covenants of the House of Israel are fulfilled in the words of Isaiah.  (1 Nephi 15:20, 3 Nephi 20:11-12)
  • We are forced to raise our level of spirituality to understand the words of Isaiah.  (Isaiah 6:9-10, 2 Nephi 15:3 & 8, 2 Nephi 25:4, Alma 12:9-11, Alma 17:2-4, Doctrine and Covenants 76:10)

Reasons why Isaiah is a difficult prophet to understand:

  • Isaiah 6:9-10
  • Jacob 4:14
  • Matthew 13:13-16
  • 2 Thessalonians 2:11-12
  • Alma 10:25
  • 2 Nephi 27:4-5
