“Administration of the holy Sacrament”  — Section 12

The holy emblems of Christ’s death

Representative of a Christian church:
Judge, I would like to present a contradiction that will be impossible for these missionaries to explain.  In Matthew 26:26-29, our Lord instituted His Holy Sacrament.  1 Corinthians 11:26 points out that the Sacrament was a commandment given to the church.  The commandments teach that members of the Church were to partake of the ‘bread and wine’ in remembrance of our Lord.  The Latter-day Saints, in their sacraments, use bread and water, which is contrary to holy scripture, and which, I should point out, is also contrary to their own scriptures.  In 3 Nephi 18:1-10 in their Book of Mormon, Christ commanded the people to partake of the ‘bread and wine’.

Missionaries of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints:
Sir, we most certainly can explain this supposed ‘contradiction’, showing that it is indeed not a contradiction.  In Matthew 26:26-29, the command was not to partake of the ‘bread and wine’ but of the ‘bread and cup’.  Nowhere in the holy scriptures can you find wine as a commandment with the bread.  The cup represents the ‘bitter cup’ of Matthew 26:39 that Christ was to partake of.  Please notice that all of the following verses mention ‘cup’ and not ‘wine’:  Matthew 26:27, Mark 14:23, Luke 22:20, and 1 Corinthians 11:25-26.  It is true that wine was in one instance placed in the cup, but the command was to drink of the cup.  You will notice that in the Book of Mormon the command is for the cup also.  A more definitive answer was given to the Prophet Joseph Smith when the Lord said, “…it mattereth not what ye shall eat or what ye shall drink when ye partake of the sacrament, if it so be that ye do it with an eye single to my glory — remembering unto the Father my body which was laid down for you, and my blood which was shed for the remission of your sins.”  (Doctrine and Covenants 27:2)
