Recent apostles who were not serving as General Authorities at the time of their call to the apostleship

It was common in the early parts of this dispensation for a brother to be called to the apostleship without having served previously as a general authority.  It is not very common for that to occur nowadays.  Here are names of recent apostles who were NOT serving as a general authority prior to their call to the apostleship.  I have listed these brethren in reverse chronological order as to the date of their ordination.

  • Elder David A. Bednar, who was sustained to the apostleship on October 2, 2004.   He was serving as the President of Brigham Young University – Idaho at the time of his call, and had previously served twice as a stake president, as a regional representative, and as an Area Seventy.
  • President Dallin H. Oaks, who was sustained to the apostleship in April of 1984.  He was serving as a judge on the Utah State Supreme Court at the time of his call.  He had previously served as President of Brigham Young University – Provo.
  • President Russell M. Nelson, who was sustained to the apostleship in April of 1984.  He was serving as the General President of the Sunday School at the time of his call to the apostleship.  He had previously served as a stake president in Salt Lake City.
  • President Thomas S. Monson, who was sustained to the apostleship on October 4, 1963, at the age of 36.  He had previously served as President of the Canadian Mission, headquartered in Toronto, Canada.  He had also served as a bishop, being called at the age of 22 to that calling!
  • President Howard W. Hunter, who was sustained to the apostleship on October 15, 1959.  He had previously served as a bishop and a stake president in California.
