Doctrine and Covenants 107 — The Melchizedek and Aaronic priesthoods

  • Verses 1-6:  
    • There are two priesthoods, the Melchizedek (MP) and Aaronic (AP).
    • Melchizedek was a great high priest, and this priesthood was named after him
    • The full name of the higher priesthood is “The Holy Priesthood, after the Order of the Son of God”
  • Verses 7-12:
    • Holders of the MP can officiated in all offices of the priesthood
    • Administering in “spiritual things” is mentioned four separate times in these verses
  • Verses 13-17:
    • The bishopric presides over the AP
    • The AP administers in the “outward ordinances”
  • Verses 18-20:
    • The MP holds the keys of all spiritual blessings (receiving the mysteries of the kingdom, having the windows of heaven opened unto them, communing with the Church of the Firstborn, enjoy the presence of God, etc.)
    • The AP holds the keys of the administering of angels
  • Verses 21-38:
    • The First Presidency, The Quorum of the Twelve, and the Seventy constitute the presiding quorums of the Church
    • All of their decisions are to be made in unity and righteousness
    • The Twelve are “special witnesses” of the NAME of Christ to all the world
  • Verses 39-52:
    • A listing of the patriarchal order that was established from Adam to Noah
  • Verses 58-67:
    • The Twelve apostles are to set the officers of the Church in order
  • Verses 68-76:
    • Bishops serve as common judges in Israel
  • Verses 77-84:
    • The First Presidency and the Twelve constitute the highest council in the Church
  • Verses 85-100:
    • Priesthood quorum leaders govern their quorums
    • Quorum members:  a) 12 Deacons   b) 24 Teachers   c) 48 Priests   d) 96 Elders
    • “The duty of the President of the office of the High Priesthood is to preside over the whole church, and to be like unto Moses,…to be a seer, a revelator, a translator, and a prophet”
    • Verses 99-100 constitute the grand duty of all priesthood holders, to learn and carry out their duties
    • “Wherefore, now let every man learn his duty, to act in the office in which he is appointed in all diligence.  He that is slothful shall not be counted worthy to stand, and he that learns not his duty and shows himself not approved shall not be counted worthy to stand.  Even so.  Amen.”
