Parley Parker Pratt was one of the original Twelve Apostles of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. His impact on the early history of the Church is immeasurable. He died as a martyr for the cause at the age of 51 while serving in Arkansas. He was shot and stabbed to death by angry mobsters.

Parley Parker Pratt (1807)
Amanda Barnes Smith was with her family at Haun’s Mill when the saints were attacked and massacred by an angry mob. Her husband and one of her sons were murdered. Another son, Alma, had his hip blown away by a rifle shot. Her faith and inspiration saved her son’s life.

Amanda Barnes Smith (1809)
Joseph Harris Ridges joined the Church in Australia. He had a keen interest in organ building. He eventually emigrated to Utah and built the first organ in the Salt Lake Tabernacle.

Joseph Harris Ridges (1827)
Joseph H. Dean was one of the first missionaries to proselyte in the Pacific Islands. He endured incredible hardships to fulfill his callings. He was also an extraordinary musician and is the author of some of our favorite LDS hymns, including ‘Before Thee Lord, I Bow My Head’.

Albert Jones was with his mother and older brother in the Martin Handcart company that was trapped in severe winter weather as they traveled to Salt Lake City. All three of them survived, and this experience helped mold this great man into a life-long devoted disciple of the Lord. My height, large hands, large feet, and male-pattern baldness are all attributable to Albert and his son (my grandfather), Albert William Jones. I consider it a privilege to carry their physical traits. How I hope I can also carry their indomitable spiritual traits.
