Discussion thoughts and promptings

Nephi mural — “Have ye inquired of the Lord?” — 1 Nephi 2:16  — Provo Missionary Training Center:

  • “…I Nephi,…having great desires to know of the mysteries of God,…I did cry unto the Lord:…and he did visit me, and did soften my heart that I did believe all the words which had been spoken by my father; …I did not rebel against him…”   Nephi was just beginning his “mission” at this time.  How might this verse apply to you as you begin your mission?
  • Nephi cried unto the Lord and “inquired” of the Lord (1 Nephi 15:8).  What things was Nephi inquiring about?  What things might you be “inquiring” of the Lord as you begin your missionary service?
  • What stage of Nephi’s life is depicted in the mural?  (Tents in a desert setting, no water within sight, camels, etc.)
  • 1 Nephi 2:16 ends with the phrase “like unto my brothers”.  What application does that phrase have for you as a missionary?
  • What significance does the word “all” have in 1 Nephi 2:16?
  • Read the verses referenced in footnote ‘b’ next to the word ‘visit’ in verse 16.  What impressions come to your mind?
  • Why is the word ‘cry’ used in verse 16 rather than ‘pray’?
  • Notice the landscape, the geography of the setting depicted in the mural.  What sacrifices did Lehi, Nephi, and their family members make to follow the Lord?  What sacrifices are you willing to make as you begin your missionary service?
