The Melchizedek Priesthood — D&C 20

  • The five great priesthood sections in the Doctrine and Covenants – 13, 20, 84, 107, 121

D&C 20:38-45 — The duties of an elder

  • To baptize
  • To ordain other elders, priests, teachers, and deacons
  • Administer the emblems of the Sacrament
  • To confirm those who are baptized into the Church by the laying on of hands
  • To teach, expound, exhort
  • To watch over the church
  • To take the lead of all meetings
  • To conduct the meetings as they are led by the Holy Ghost
  • To perform all of these duties “by the power of the Holy Ghost”

D&C 20:26-52 — The duties of a priest

  • To preach, teach, expound, exhort
  • To baptize and administer the sacrament
  • Visit the house of each member, exhorting members to pray and to attend to family duties
  • To ordain other priests, teachers, and deacons
  • To take the lead of meetings if no elder is present

D&C 20:53-57 — The duties of a teacher

  • To watch over the church always
  • To be with and strengthen the church
  • To see that there is no iniquity, or hardness, lying, backbiting, or evil speaking
  • To see that the church meets together often
  • To see that members do their duty
  • To prepare the Sacrament

D&C 20:59 — The duties of a deacon

  • To warn, expound, exhort, and teach, and to invite all to come unto Christ
  • To pass the Sacrament

Purposes of the Melchizedek Priesthood

  • To serve as a valiant disciple of Christ through priesthood power and service 
  • To serve an honorable full-time mission
