Worlds without number

An astronomy and star talk given at a youth conference in Taranaki, New Zealand

Talk to Young Women at Dawson Falls camp on Friday, April 17th, 2015, Taranaki, New Zealand

1/ Start with “worlds without numbers have I created, and for my own purposes have I created them, and by My Son were they created..”

  • How many?
  • How long did it take?
  • How can He keep track of them all?

2/ To help understand just how big and how many, here are some interesting astronomy facts. I call these jaw-droppers::

  • Earth – sun comparison – show a coin, sun would be my height in diameter (Earth is 8000 miles in diameter, the Sun 865,000 miles in diameter)
  • One million earths volumes to equal the volume of our Sun
  • There is a star in the constellation Orion named Betelguese.  If you placed it where our sun is, this massive star would reach out to the orbit of Jupiter
  • One million of our suns to equal the volume of Betelguese
  • Speed of light = 186,000 miles per second, around the equator 7.5 times in  one second
  • Jetliner would take about 30 hours to fly around our equator once.
  • Sun light takes 8 minutes to travel to us, 5.5 hours to reach Pluto
  • Size of galaxy – if Sun is a golf ball, where would I put another golf ball to represent the closest star or Sun to us?  It is called alpha Centauri.   INVERCARGILL, 850 miles.  It is 24 trillion miles.  Staggering.
  • Size of galaxy – there are over 300 billion stars in the Milky Way galaxy
  • Size of galaxy – if dinner plate represents our Solar system, the galaxy would be the entire continent of Australia.
  • 300 billion stars in MWG, if only 1 out of every 1000 had an earth that  would support life, that would be 3 million earths.  If only 1 in every 10,000, that would be 300,000
  • It will take the MWG 265 million years to rotate once, and it is traveling at 500,000 mph.
  • Estimate that there are 400 billion galaxies

3/ D&C 88: The earth rolls upon her wings, the sun…

  • Seen Him?  Face to face conversation.  A watch declares the existence of a watchmaker.  If this earth then does not declare the existence of a Creator, then I consent to being called a fool..
  • Alma 30 — The earth and all things on it, the planets in their regular motion testify of God’s existence.  They are witnesses!  Viewing the sky is participating in a testimony meeting,  They seem to say, if you have seen us, you have seen our Creator.  We testify of Him.
  • When I see the face of the moon or Saturn’s rings through a telescope, I have a sense of awe and reverence.  I have seen God moving in his majesty and power.

4/ Christ came here!

  • Infinite number of earths.  Where did Christ come to live his mortal life?  Here!  Why?
  • What does that say about you?  Section 76 teaches us that Christ is the Savior of all of God’s creations, so he came here!  When other worlds read their scriptures, they read about this earth and the Atonement wrought on  this earth.  You are here
  • How important is your life?  Video games, cell phones, hanging out?  No to testify!
  • Greatest wickedness?  Greatest strength!!
