“The Trial”  — Section 28

Joseph Smith mentioned in the Bible?  Was he a ‘prophet’?

Representative of a Christian church:
If Joseph Smith was a true prophet as your church claims, it seems to me that we should see his name mentioned in the Bible.

Missionaries of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints:
Consider this, if you would.  We read of a 400 year difference between the Old Testament and the New Testament, while there is an 1800 year difference between Joseph Smith and the Bible.  Can you show us where the name Jesus Christ is found any place in the Old Testament?

Representative of a Christian church:
Well, no, I can’t, but how do you know Joseph Smith was a prophet?

Missionaries of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints:
He was a prophet because he fulfilled the scriptures of apostasy and those scripture of restoration.  Paul said, “Be not carried about with divers and strange doctrines.”  (Hebrews 13:9)  That there were to be no prophets or revelations is taught no place in the scriptures.  Christ, through his servant Paul, taught, “And the eye cannot say unto the hand, I have no need of thee; nor the hand to the feet, I have no need of thee.”  This he said, comparing the offices of the church to a human body.  (1 Corinthians 12:1-31)  To say we have no need of apostles and prophets is a strange and diverse doctrine and was not taught by the Savior nor by his apostles.
