Tithing, fast offerings, Fast Sundays — Section 40

Tithing, fast offerings, and Fast Sundays are not found in the New Testament church!

Representative of a Christian church:
I understand that in your church you have the requirements of paying tithing, paying fast offerings, and fasting on Fast Sundays each month.  I do not see any evidence of these practices in the New Testament church or the teachings of Jesus.  Can you explain this?

Missionaries of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints:
With regards to tithing, you will find that Christ taught this principle in Matthew 23:23. This verse says, “Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye pay tithe of mint and anise and cummin, and have omitted the weightier matters of the law, judgment, mercy, and faith: these ought ye to have done, and not to leave the other undone.”  Regarding fast offerings, we read in 1 Corinthians 16:2, “Upon the first day of the week let every one of you lay by him in store, as God hath prospered him, that there be no gatherings when I come.”  We would also add, that our church is led by apostles and prophets, and laws, ordinances, covenants, and principles are received by them and instituted as the Lord directs.
